CBS/BHMT Assist (HomCyst) contains powerful nutrients that help support the enzymes Cystathionine-ß-synthase (CBS) and Betaine-homocysteine S-methyltransferase (BHMT). CBS catalyzes the first step of the transsulfuration pathway, which converts homocysteine into cystathionine. Elevated homocysteine levels are associated with a myriad of chronic health conditions including cardiovascular disease. The BHMT enzyme catalyzes a methyl transfer from betaine to homocysteine to form dimethylglycine and methionine, respectively. Methionine is needed to produce our body’s primary methyl donor, SAMe. Genetic polymorphisms, epigenetic factors and/or inhibitors or lack of cofactors can cause these enzymes to function improperly, leading to high homocysteine and low SAMe. The nutrients contained in this product such as Acetyl L-Carnitine, Yucca, Lecithin and Trimethylglycine (TMG) can help support these very important biological reactions. This product can be used in those with impaired transsulfuration pathways, reflected by low glutathione, high homocysteine as well as a multitude of symptoms that reflect impairment in sulfation and methylation.
