Recently, I have received many emails and calls regarding the Coronavirus pandemic -- what to do, what to take and how to protect and support our immune system.
To quote Dr. A Bechamp -- “the microbe is nothing, the milieu is everything.” The severity of a viral disease is not solely determined by the virus itself, but rather by a persons’ overall health. Therefore, some people become severely ill while others show no symptoms of COVID-19.
Taking steps to strengthen our immune function is likely one of the most important preventative strategies against COVID-19. But, it is also important to address any underlying health issues that adversely impact our immune systems.
You Probably Know… But Here’s a Brief Summary of COVID-19
COVID-19, otherwise known as the SARS-CoV-2, is a type of RNA virus. What it has in common with the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) that was going around in 2003 and the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in 2012 is that they are all RNA viruses that infect the lung.
Viruses are small particles of genetic material surrounded by a protein coat. They are incapable of reproducing on their own, instead depending on their infected hosts for their very survival.
Viruses infect a host by introducing their RNA into the cell’s nucleus and hijacking the organ’s internal machinery to make more virus particles. With an active viral infection, a virus uses host DNA to make copies of itself and bursts the host cell (killing it) to set the newly formed virus particles free.
Studies have shown that COVID-19 has a higher affinity for the human receptor ACE2 than the original SARS virus strain.
SARS-CoV-2 has a specific structure that allows it to bind “at least 10 times more tightly than the corresponding spike protein of [SARS-CoV] to their common host cell receptor.” Partly, this is due to the fact that the spike protein contains a site that recognizes and becomes activated by a protease enzyme called Furin.
Both Influenza and Coronavirus cause an inflammatory storm in the lungs -- it is this inflammatory storm that leads to acute respiratory distress, organ failure, and even death.
Persons with compromised cell membranes, especially in their lungs, gut and cardiovascular system are more susceptible to severe consequences of viral infections.
How Can You Protect Yourself and Your Family?
Taking steps to strengthen our immune function is likely one of our most important preventative strategies. Currently, there are no specific nutritional treatments for Coronavirus itself. However, an overall immune support strategy should focus on strengthening our NK, T-Cell, and B-Cell functions.
Your Prevention and Recovery Strategy Should Include the Following
Supporting cell membrane integrity and function
Blocking viral entrance and replication
Supporting immune system balance, particularly boosting the innate immune system and decreasing Th1/Th2 inflammation to help with prevention and recovery from viral illnesses
